Why do we keep inmates who are serving life in jail still?

James asked:

Why do we keep inmates who are serving life in jail still? Instead of spending tax money on keeping them alive, can’t we just gas to their death? Save money and more space in prison for short term inmates?
I guess America is F*cked. You get raped, killed, robbed by inmates and you the tax payer pay for it all.

The jail spaced filled up with the population would execute the sidewalk but thats not likely to someone getting executed for spitting on.
